Birth Story Medicine

What Is Birth Story Medicine?

Something happened in that room. And part of you has never left it.

You've moved forward — you've had to. But there's a version of you still standing at the threshold of that birth, holding something heavy, waiting for someone to finally ask what it was really like.

Birth story medicine creates the conditions for that telling. In a structured, one-on-one session, you speak your experience aloud from beginning to end, without interruption, without judgment. A trained doula holds the space, reflects back what they hear, and helps you begin to integrate what happened into your larger life. It is not therapy. It is not debriefing. It is something older than both — the simple, profound act of having your story fully received.

Sessions are available in person in Toronto, and virtually to clients across the world.

You May Need This If...

  • You find yourself replaying your birth — on a loop, uninvited, often at night.

  • You feel like you should be over it by now, but you're not. The birth was months ago, maybe years ago, and something still sits unresolved in your chest.

  • You felt invisible during your labor. Like decisions were made around you, not with you. Like your body was managed rather than supported.

  • Your birth didn't go as planned, and you're not sure whether to grieve that or let it go.

  • People keep telling you that a healthy baby is all that matters — and while you know that's true, it doesn't quite reach the part of you that's hurting.

  • You're pregnant again and you can't stop thinking about last time.

  • You experienced something traumatic — an emergency, a loss, a procedure you didn't consent to — and you've never had the chance to say it out loud to someone who can sit with it.

  • You're struggling to connect with your postpartum self because you haven't fully made sense of how you got here.

What Happens in a Session?

You tell your story. All of it — from the first contraction to the moment you were handed your baby, or the moment everything changed in a way you're still trying to understand.

But this is not simply a retelling. It is a release.

The body keeps birth the way soil keeps water — it doesn't disappear, it goes somewhere deep, and it stays there until something draws it back to the surface. For many women, that stored experience has been pressing outward for months, sometimes years. It lives in the shoulders that won't drop, the sleep that won't come, the story that catches in the throat every time it gets close to the part that really hurt.

As you speak, something begins to move. Your doula is trained to stay with you inside the hardest moments — not to rush past them, not to soften them, but to hold them open long enough for the pressure to find a way out.

You are not guided toward a conclusion. You are accompanied through the actual terrain of what happened, step by step, until the story has been fully walked.

What was compressed begins to expand. What was sealed begins to breathe. The experience that has been living in your body as tension, as dread, as a locked room you kept walking past — begins to release its hold.

By the time you finish, the story has not changed. But you are no longer trapped inside it.

Sessions are available to prenatal and postpartum clients. There is no timeline on when this work becomes relevant. Some mothers come six weeks out. Others come six years out.

What Becomes Possible

You tell your story. All of it — from the first contraction to the moment you were handed your baby, or the moment everything changed in a way you're still trying to understand.

But this is not simply a retelling. It is a release.

The body keeps birth the way soil keeps water — it doesn't disappear, it goes somewhere deep, and it stays there until something draws it back to the surface. For many women, that stored experience has been pressing outward for months, sometimes years. It lives in the shoulders that won't drop, the sleep that won't come, the story that catches in the throat every time it gets close to the part that really hurt.

Some find that the distance they felt from their baby — that strange, guilty gap — begins to close. Others notice that they can finally be present in their body again, no longer bracing against a memory that kept surfacing uninvited.

Relationships change too. Partners who couldn't understand why you were still affected often begin to, once you've found language for what happened. Families stop feeling like a performance you have to manage. You stop editing yourself.

“You become more fully yourself again. And in that, everything around you shifts a little too.”

This work will not change what happened. But it can change how you carry it.
